Don Pasquale (Italian pronunciation: [dɔm paˈskwaːle; dom]) is an opera buffa, or comic opera, in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti with an Italian libretto completed largely by Giovanni Ruffini as well as the composer. It was based on a libretto by Angelo Anelli for Stefano Pavesi's opera Ser Marcantonio written in 1810[1] but, on the published libretto, the author appears as "M.A." Donizetti so dominated the preparation of the libretto that Ruffini refused to allow his name to be put on the score. This resulted in confusion over the identity of the librettist for more than half a century,[2] but as Herbert Weinstock establishes, it was largely Ruffini's work and, in withholding his name from it as librettist, "Donizetti or Accursi may have thought that, lacking Ruffini's name, the authorship might as well be assigned to Accursi's initials as to a pseudonym".[3] The opera was first performed on 3 January 1843 by the Théâtre-Italien at the Salle Ventadour in Paris with great success[4] and it is generally regarded as being the high point of the 19th century opera buffa tradition and, in fact, marking its ending.(Wikipedia)

Act I 0:00:01 Act I finale 1:15:17 Act II 1:23:58 Gaetano Donizetti, Enrico di Borgogna - Opera semiseria ('opera eroica') in 2 acts; Vadstena Academy Orchestra and Choir, Olof Boman (conductor), Vadstena Castle, Sweden, August 2012 Cast: Enrico: Kinga Dobay Pietro: Markus Pettersson Elisa: Rebecca Rasmussen Guido: Thomas Volle Brunone: Ludvig Lindström Gilberto: Christian Oldenburg Nicola: Peter Nyqvist Geltrude: Christina Nilsson Production: Vadstena Academy Direction and choreography: Clara Svärd Stage design: Clive Leaver Costume design: Anna Kjellsdotter Lighting design: Jimmy Ström Makeup design: Katrin Wahlberg Editor: Anders Wiklund Vadstena Academy staged the first performance of Donizetti's Enrico di Borgogna in modern times. Alan Jackson has provided the following commentary following his visit on August 3, 2012: The first performance of Donizetti’s first opera took place in Venice in 1818. The Vadstena Academy’s performances this summer marked its first revival, thanks to Anders Wiklund’s work in producing a performing edition using an incomplete score in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and a thankfully complete score more recently discovered in the Royal Library in Copenhagen. Both of these are manuscript copies; the autograph seems lost. The Vadstena Academy is one of Sweden’s foremost centres of continuing education for opera singers and musicians. A UK equivalent would perhaps be the opera course at Guildhall School of Music and Drama or British Youth Opera, though the programme biography for mezzo-soprano Dinga Dobay who took the title role reveals a somewhat more advanced career. The Academy’s repertoire policy is to study and perform a newly written work and an old work that has not been performed in modern times. Past students include Anne-Sofie von Otter, Hillevi Martinpelto, Camilla Tilling and Nina Stemme (to name a few that are familiar to me). I found Enrico attractive to listen to, fascinating even, as one tries to identify the influences at that very early stage of his career. Given that Mayr was Donizetti’s first teacher, it seems reasonable to describe the music of Enrico as Mayrian with Rossinian flavourings - the Rossini of Tancredi and the comedies such as La Cenerentola which Donizetti would have heard in Bergamo in 1818. Typical Donizetti lyricism is still a few years ahead. The vocal writing is florid, as one would expect, and most of it was capably managed by the cast, including the men. But pre-eminent were the two leading ladies, Rebecca Rasmussen as Elisa (even though illness led to some cuts in her music at the performance I attended) and especially Kinga Dobay in the virtuosic title role, a trouser part. The orchestra of period instruments was admirably conducted by Olof Boman. The production by Clara Svärd was straight-forward, props were limited but apt, costumes were historical, and thankfully army fatigues and machine guns were nowhere to be seen. The best known moment is probably the opening of Enrico’s Act I cabaletta. Donizetti re-used the theme in Anna Bolena’s mad scene, though I wonder how conscious this was. All in all, a fascinating and enjoyable evening. Congratulations to Vadstena for exhuming Enrico; it deserves not to wait another 194 years for its next revival.

Juan Diego Flórez sings the famous aria 'Ah! mes amis' from Donizetti's opera La fille du régiment. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk La Fille du régiment had its premiere at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1840. Its combination of comedy, genuine feeling and patriotic sentiment soon made it a national institution, and it was regularly revived on Bastille Day in France. The opera had a long absence from Covent Garden, but in 1966 Joan Sutherland reintroduced it to London. She played the irrepressible heroine, Marie, with Luciano Pavarotti as her lover, Tonio. La Fille returned to the Royal Opera House in 2007 in Laurent Pelly's delightful production, which has since toured the world. Pelly's production fizzes with exuberant humour. It features wonderfully inventive sets: large maps evoke the mountains of Tyrol, the regiment’s camp drowns in laundry and an armoured tank bursts into a drawing room. Gaetano Donizetti’s score weaves robust, military melodies with moments of pathos. Musical highlights include the bravura tenor aria 'Pour mon âme', with its vertical leaps to a succession of high Cs, and the delightful duet 'Quoi? vous m'aimez!' in which Tonio expresses his love for Marie.

Michael Spyres sings Polyeucte's Act III cabaletta "Oui, j'irai dans les temples", Mark Elder, conductor. Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Opera Rara Chorus. 4 Nov 2014 Royal Festival Hall, London Michael Spyres - Polyeucte Joyce El-Khoury - Pauline David Kempster - Sévère Brindley Sherratt - Félix Clive Bayley - Callisthènes Wynne Evans - Néarque Opera Rara Chorus Les Martyrs (The Martyrs) is a four-act grand opera by Gaetano Donizetti set to a French libretto by Eugene Scribe. The libretto was based on one written by Salvadore Cammarano for an original Italian version known as Poliuto, which was not performed until after the composer's death. Pierre Corneille's play Polyeucte written in 1641–42, the story of which reflected the life of the early Christian martyr Saint Polyeuctus, is the original source for both versions. When Poliuto was banned by the King of Naples just before it was due to be performed in 1838, Donizetti became angry at this decision and, with a commission from the Paris Opéra due, he paid the penalty to the San Carlo for not producing an original work as a substitute, and left Naples for Paris arriving on 21 October. As his first of two commissions for the Opéra, he proposed to revise Poliuto and, between 1839 and 1840, a French text was prepared by the noted French librettist and dramatist, Eugene Scribe, which conformed to the conventions of French grand opera but which incorporated 80% of the music from Poliuto. Revised to suit the taste of the Paris opera-going public and with the title changed to Les martyrs, the opera was presented on 10 April 1840. When eventually given in Italy, Les Martyrs was initially presented in a translation from the French version under several titles including I martiri. It took until 30 November 1848, months after the composer's death, in order for Poliuto to finally appear at the San Carlo in its original Italian three-act version, the one which is most frequently performed today. It is regarded by one writer as Donizetti's "most personal opera" with the music being "some of the finest Donizetti was to compose".
